“How does the stock market work” is a question that may be cynically answered some days, “It doesn’t” but that’s not what’s being asked. For people, like Nancy, who are just starting to invest, the seemingly simple questions are not all that easy to answer. In fact, the stock market can be a rather scary venture for the average investor… a maze of twists and turns on the road to financial success.
If you’re just staring to invest, then you need to learn the rules of the road… so, today, I’ll introduce you to the stock market, in a variety of terms… in fact, rather than bore you with a lecture or provide you with definitions until your eyes roll into the back of your head, I thought I’d point to you a few more entertaining links that will help you capture the gist of it (click the links):

- If you’re looking for the more traditional (aka boring) and informative Explanation you’ll likely enjoy this brief account of the stock market and how to trade.
- As a new investor, you’re not immune to hearing about market meltdowns, tech bubbles, or the European economic crises amongst the PIIGS (no, I’m not being rude… just take a look at the article). So, it’s no wonder some people are cynical… and when I came across this Slap Stick Comedy, I had to laugh. As Dick Clark once said, “Humor is always based on a modicum of truth.”
- Or, if you’re looking for a laugh with no real connection to the stock market, except for the money, you may just enjoy this humorous commercial.
Learning about how the stock market works and how to trade stocks shouldn’t be overwhelming… it should be relaxing and enjoyable. I’ve been investing in one way or another for over fifteen years and I can honestly say that the stock market still makes little to no sense. I think computers drive way too much of it these days.

Computers have really influenced how easy it is for the average investor to get involved without a high priced intermediary. And the “flash crash” may reveal you’re suspicions are not unfounded… but it’s hard to say just how much computers “drive” the markets. “Too much” may be an accurate depiction!
